Savannah and Johnny did the whole spending time with each other's families for Christmas. A day each. And it was enough. The rest of their break would be spent with each other, basking in the sun, snorkeling, fishing (Johnny would like to try, hush), and you know, doing what they did best.

Currently they were waist deep in the most gorgeous water ever, and Johnny was enjoying himself by splashing his girlfriend. It was what boyfriends did, right? Especially since she was wearing next to nothing. She deserved to be flirted with.

"Am I," he grinned. "Maybe you should tell me how so."

"Mmm... I will as soon as you retrieve that box that someone dropped into your shirt while you were in the water." Her expression was suddenly shy.

Johnny looked at her, surprised. But he did as she said and reached behind him where his shirt lay and sure enough, tucked inside was a box. He pulled it out and looked back at her, a brow arched in question.

She blushed, looking into his eyes for a long moment, before dropping hers.

"You going to open it?"

She was too damn adorable. He reached a hand behind her head and drew her in for a quick, but thorough kiss.

"Yes, I'm going to open it." Which he did right then and was awed by her gift, guessing at the cost. "It gorgeous, Savannah."

"I know it's a bit feminine, so I won't be upset if you don't want to wear it in public, but it was the only thing I could find that was a representation of you having my heart and..."

Oh look, she was babbling and blushing.

"No, shh, I love it. Help me with the clasp?" His fingers fumbled with it and just handed it to her so she could put it on for him.

"It's gorgeous, sweetheart. I'm not going to take it off."

She blushed again and reached to fasten the chain around his neck.

His eyes moved over her face. He loved her. Deeply.

"I know I haven't given you yours yet," he said quietly. "But I'm not sure how well you'll recieve it."

Savannah looked confused. "I don't understand, love. Why would you be worried? I've loved everything you've ever gotten me."

"This is different," he said, lowering his eyes.

Savannah reached up to cradle his face between he hands. "What is it?"

"It's probably too much to ask you to accept it, Savannah," he said, lifting his lashes to look at her. "This isn't anything like I've given you before. This is... it's a promise." Johnny really sucked at this emotional stuff and he shifted, uncomfortable.

Savannah was still confused, but she leaned forward to touch her lips to his gently.

"You know I'd promise you anything I could, Johnny. Show me?"

He looked into her eyes, and he was worried.

"Stay here. I'll be right back," he said, and carefully shifted again, sliding her to the chair as he stood. "Wait. Here... I'll be back." He took off then, jogging easily back to their beach hut and grabbed her Christmas gift he had hidden in a black box, in his bag. Opening it, he stared down at it, and knew he wanted to give it to her... wanted to ask her to be with him forever...

But it was just a promise for now, of what he could give her later. And he was worried she might not accept it. She was young and had a year and half left of school.

Taking a deep breath, he snapped it closed and jogged back to the loung chairs, to where she was waiting for him. Looking at her, at her confused face, he knelt in the sand and palm up, showed her the small black box. "For you. If you'll accept it."

Savannah opened the box and stared at the ring. Her eyes filled with tears when she realized what he was asking. Holding the box carefully in one hand so it didn't fall, she wrapped her other arm around his neck and pulled him to her so that she could kiss him.

He kissed her and realized he was actually shaking and tried to calm down. She hadn't said anything yet and what did those tears mean? Johnny probably didn't understand girls as well as well as he thought he did.

"Sweetheart?" he whispered.

She pulled back to smile at him and nodded. "Yes?"

"Uh. I... do you like it?"

She pulled back, and then repositioned herself in his lap.

"I love it."

He held her close. "But, uh, do you understand the meaning.. I mean, what it means. What I meant..." he was tumbling over his words so just shut up.

She nuzzled his neck and then pulled back to look into his eyes.

"I think I do," she said softly. "I'll tell you what I think it means... and you tell me if I'm right or wrong, okay?"

He nodded. He was good with that.

She took a deep breath, suddenly nervous that she was mistaken about what the ring meant.

"Is it... is it a promise ring... for me and you...?"

Johnny closed his eyes, briefly, in relief. "Yes, sweetheart. That's exactly what it is. But, god, you don't have to accept it as that. Think about it. Whatever..."
